EKSATH News Paper Company Limited, The Lake House, holds the distinction of being the most ancient newspaper company in Asia. It is revered as the Associated Newspaper Ceylon Ltd. also known as “Paththara Mahagedara” due to its rich and illustrious history. Throughout different epochs, remarkable individuals have contributed to the glory of Sri Lanka, and one shining example is the former editor of Lake House, D.R. Wijewardena. He stands as an exemplary figure who not only played a pivotal role in the national freedom struggle but also served as a source of inspiration for the entire nation. Apart from Dinamina, Silumina Shasthriya, Daily News, and Sunday Observer catering to the Tamil-speaking readership, there are trilingual news publications like Thinakaran and vaaramanjari. Additionally, the Lake House Institute publishes the country’s only Buddhist news outlet, Budu Sarana and also the News Papers such as Kala Lova Sarasaviya, Suba Setha Jyotisha Newspaper, Tharuni, and more. These offerings from Lake House are not just publications; they are cherished expressions that illuminate the minds of the youth with wisdom and pride. In 1926, the proud commencement of Sri Lanka’s newspaper industry was heralded with the founding of the Lake House Institute. The newspaper Dinamna, signifying ‘Dawase Alokaya,’ gained popularity as a daily publication, and in 1930, the “Silumina” was also published. Silumina played a significant role in fostering enlightenment among the nation’s people through its coverage of overseas studies and contributions. Esteemed media personalities such as Martin Wickramasinha, DB Dhanapala, HS Perera, Piyasena Nishanka, Meemana Prematilake, Dharmasiri Gamage, and Randu Charita have all served as editors of Lake House Newspapers. The Lake House Newspapers now hold the prestigious reputation they do in the realm of news thanks to the century-long appreciation and recognition they’ve earned from the public. Before the advent of the technological revolution, Lake House was the catalyst for the establishment of newspapers that are now available digitally in “Eyambaru”. Today, Lake House newspapers are accessible as online publications, and a new generation is becoming familiar with social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.

About Academy

Lake House Media Academy

With the noble aim of nurturing journalists and media experts who will play a pivotal role in the future advancement of Sri Lanka’s media industry, the Lake House Media Academy was established on September 26, 2022, featuring the participation of the Honourable Minister of Media, Dr. Bandula Gunawardena. Beyond providing the essential academic knowledge and comprehension needed for journalism, Lake House’s hands-on media training sets it apart and is truly distinctive. Apart from providing the university-level education and insights necessary for journalism, Lake House’s hands-on media training is exceptional.

The Lake House Media Academy holds the distinction of being the first media academy established by a newspaper agency in Sri Lanka. Prof. Harendra Kariyawasam, who currently serves as the Chairman of Lake House Institute, assumed the role of the inaugural course director at the Lakehouse Media Academy, following the vision of Mr. Anusha Palpita, Secretary of the Ministry of Media and the former Chairman of Lake House.

The Lake House Media Academy offers a range of programs, including certificate and advanced certificate courses, diploma courses, and one-day workshops focused on the media sector. During its first year, the Media Academy effectively introduced a variety of courses and workshops. These educational events are led by prominent figures in the media industry, experienced journalists, university professors, and the professional experts in the field of media.

The Lake House Media Academy’s course offerings are overseen by a committee comprising seasoned journalists and senior managers with a wealth of knowledge and experience. This organizing committee collaborates closely with the Lake House Institute, tailoring their efforts to the individual talents and capabilities of each student. The faculty members instructing Lake House’s media courses are a diverse group, including senior journalists, university lecturers and professors, and potential artists with extensive expertise.
